Initial registration (pharmacists)

Before applying to register with ACP, you need to create an account in myACP. For new accounts

  1. Navigate to myacp.abpharmacy.ca.
  2. Click “Request access.”
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to obtain your access. Note that you will need to refer to confirmation emails that will be sent to your email inbox to obtain access to myACP.

U of A pharmacy student

If you are a student enrolled in the University of Alberta’s Entry to Practice Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program, you are eligible to apply to the pharmacy student register. Registration with ACP is required to practise as a pharmacy student under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.

  1. Prepare your supporting documentation. All documents must be in PDF format.
  2. Complete and submit your application.
    • Once you are ready to apply, complete the following steps:
      • Access the application to the pharmacy student register in myACP. All applications can be found in the Catalog.
      • The application will require you to upload the supporting documentation you prepared in Step 1. Your application is not complete until all supporting documentation has been uploaded and you have submitted the application.
  3. Application decision
    • Complete applications are reviewed in the order in which they are submitted and may take up to 15 business days to assess and process. Incomplete applications will result in further delays.
    • ACP will notify you via email once a decision has been made or if we have any questions regarding your application.
  4. Provide your payment.
    • If approved, you will be required to provide payment online. The college’s fees are outlined in the ACP fee schedule. Only the following payment methods will be accepted:
      • Visa
      • Mastercard
    • Payment must be provided within 30 days of your approval, or your application will expire. If this happens, you will be required to reapply.
  5. Access your practice permit.
    • Once your payment has been processed, your practice permit can be accessed from your myACP profile.
    • The term of a student practice permit is typically four years and commences when the practice permit is issued.
    • You must not practise as a pharmacy student until you receive notification that your practice permit is issued.

Once you have successfully graduated from the pharmacy program, you are then eligible to submit the application to the provisional pharmacist register by a CCAPP grad in myACP to complete the entry-to-practice requirements to be a pharmacist in Alberta. Additional information available in myACP.

Out of province CCAPP or ACPE pharmacy student

If you are a student enrolled in a pharmacy program at a Canadian university, outside of Alberta, that is accredited by the Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs (CCAPP), or an American university that is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), you are eligible to apply to the pharmacy student register. Registration with ACP is required to practise as a pharmacy student under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. 

  1. Prepare your supporting documentation. All documents must be in PDF format.
  2. Complete and submit your application.
    • Once you are ready to apply, complete the following steps:
      • Access the application to the pharmacy student register in myACP. All applications can be found in the Catalog.
      • If you only need a temporary permit to complete a short-term practicum or rotation in Alberta, you may apply for a six-month term at a reduced fee. However, if you intend to practise as a pharmacist in Alberta at the conclusion of your studies, we recommend applying for the full four-year term.
      • The application will require you to upload the supporting documentation you prepared in Step 1. Your application is not complete until all supporting documentation has been uploaded and you have submitted the application.
  3. Application decision.
    • Complete applications are reviewed in the order in which they are submitted and may take up to 15 business days to assess and process. Incomplete applications will result in further delays.
    • ACP will notify you via email once a decision has been made or if we have any questions regarding your application.
  4. Provide your payment.

Once you have successfully graduated from the pharmacy program, you are then eligible to submit the application to the provisional pharmacist register by a pharmacy student in myACP. You must be on the provisional pharmacist register to complete the entry-to-practice requirements to be a pharmacist in Alberta. Additional information available in myACP.

Internationally educated pharmacist graduate

If you are an internationally educated pharmacist, you must meet the requirements indicated below to be eligible to apply to the provisional pharmacist register. Registration with ACP is required to practise as a provisional pharmacist (intern) under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.

  1. Enroll in the NAPRA Pharmacists’ Gateway Canada.
    • Ensure you have chosen the Alberta College of Pharmacy (ACP) as your designated Pharmacy Regulatory Authority (PRA) and have completed the engagement process. If you have previously chosen a different PRA, you will be required to add ACP as an additional PRA on your Pharmacists’ Gateway Canada profile.
  2. Meet the English language fluency requirements.
    • Evidence of English language fluency must be added to your Pharmacists’ Gateway Canada profile. English language fluency results must be current within two years at the time of application to the provisional pharmacist register.

Out of province Canadian pharmacy program graduate

If you are a graduate of a Canadian university pharmacy program that is accredited by the Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs (CCAPP), you are eligible to apply to the provisional pharmacist register. Registration with ACP is required to practise as a provisional pharmacist (intern) under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.

  1. Prepare your supporting documentation. All documents must be in PDF format.
    • If available, proof of graduation (e.g., a letter from your university confirming graduation or degree).
    • If not available, you may be required to provide proof of graduation later in the application process.
    • Prepare the initial registration documents.
  2. Complete and submit your application.
    • Once you are ready to apply, complete the following steps:
      • Access the application to the provisional pharmacist register in myACP. All applications can be found in the Catalog.
      • The application will require you to upload the supporting documentation you prepared in Step 1. Your application is not complete until all supporting documentation has been uploaded and you have submitted the application.
  3. Application decision

You have two years to complete the entry-to-practice requirements to be a pharmacist in Alberta. Once these requirements are met, you are then eligible to apply to the clinical pharmacist register in myACP. Additional information available in myACP.

Out of province pharmacist

If you are currently a pharmacist in another Canadian province or territory, you may transfer to Alberta under the Labour Mobility Act. You must first apply to the provisional pharmacist register to complete ACP’s Jurisprudence Learning Module and Ethics & Jurisprudence Exam. Once these requirements are complete, you may apply to the clinical pharmacist register. You must hold the pharmacist practice permit in another Canadian jurisdiction both at initial registration and at the time of application to the clinical pharmacist register in Alberta.

  1. Prepare your supporting documentation. All documents must be in PDF format.
    • Obtain a letter of standing from the Canadian regulatory authority where you are currently registered as a pharmacist. This letter must include the following information:
      • whether you are in good standing with the current registering body;
      • whether you have good character, as determined by the current registering body;
      • whether you have any restrictions, limitations, or conditions imposed by the current registering body and if so, identifying the restriction, limitation, or condition; and
      • whether the registering body is aware of any complaints, investigations, disciplinary proceedings, or criminal proceedings relating to competency, conduct, or character that are ongoing or completed;
        • if so, identifying and providing particulars of any such complaint, investigation, disciplinary proceeding, or criminal proceeding, including the outcome of the complaint, investigation, or proceeding.
    • Obtain a statement of registration history from any other Canadian regulatory authority where you previously have been registered as a pharmacist. This statement must include the following information:
      • whether the registering body is aware of any complaints, investigations, disciplinary proceedings, or criminal proceedings relating to competency, conduct, or character that are ongoing or completed;
        • if so, identifying and providing particulars of any such complaint, investigation, disciplinary proceeding or criminal proceeding, including the outcome of the complaint, investigation, or proceeding.
    • If you are a pharmacist transferring from the province of Quebec, you must submit evidence of English language proficiency with your initial application in accordance with the Labour Mobility Regulation.
    • Prepare these initial registration documents.
  2. Complete and submit your application.
    • Once you are ready to apply, complete the following steps:
      • Access the application to the provisional pharmacist register in myACP. All applications can be found in the Catalog.
      • The application will require you to upload the supporting documentation you prepared in Step 1. Your application is not complete until all supporting documentation has been uploaded and you have submitted the application. Incomplete applications and incomplete requirements will result in further delays and may result in refusal of your application. If this happens, you will be required to reapply.
  3. Application decision
    • Complete applications are reviewed in the order in which they are submitted and may take up to 15 business days to assess and process. ACP will notify you via email once a decision has been made or if we have any questions regarding your application.
  4. Provide your payment.

You will be initially placed on the provisional register to complete Alberta’s Jurisprudence Learning Module and Ethics & Jurisprudence Exam. Once successfully completed, you are then eligible to apply to the clinical pharmacist register in myACP. Additional information available in myACP.

Courtesy pharmacist register (locum)

If you are currently a pharmacist in good standing in another Canadian province or territory, you may apply to the courtesy pharmacist register if you require registration in Alberta on a temporary basis to either

  • practise as a pharmacist temporarily in Alberta (registration as a Pharmacist Locum is required), or
  • teach the practice of pharmacists to regulated members of ACP (registration as a Pharmacist CE Provider is required).

You must maintain your registration in the other jurisdiction while registered on the courtesy pharmacist register.

  1. Prepare your supporting documentation. All documents must be in PDF format.
    • Obtain a letter of standing from the Canadian regulatory authority where you are currently registered as a pharmacist. This letter must include the following information:
      • whether you are in good standing with the current registering body;
      • whether you have good character, as determined by the current registering body;

Once approved, the term of a practice permit for a Pharmacist Locum term is 45 days and commences when the practice permit is issued. You must not commence practising in Alberta until you receive notification that your practice permit is issued.

Courtesy pharmacist register (CE provider)

If you are currently a pharmacist in good standing in another Canadian province or territory, you may apply to the courtesy pharmacist register if you require registration in Alberta on a temporary basis to either

  • practise as a pharmacist temporarily in Alberta (registration as a Pharmacist Locum is required), or
  • teach the practice of pharmacists to regulated members of ACP (registration as a Pharmacist CE Provider is required).

You must maintain your registration in the other jurisdiction while registered on the courtesy pharmacist register.

A CE Provider is prohibited from practising as a pharmacist in Alberta and from providing patient care. The scope of a CE Provider in Alberta is restricted to the provision of professional development programs.

  1. Prepare your supporting documentation. All documents must be in PDF format.
    • Obtain a letter of standing from the Canadian provincial regulatory authority in the jurisdiction where you are currently licensed. If applicable, letters of standing are also required from any other Canadian jurisdiction where you are or previously have been licensed. The letters must indicate your current status within that jurisdiction.
    • Prepare the initial registration documents.
  2. Complete and submit the application.
    • Apply to the courtesy pharmacist register as a CE Provider in myACP. All applications can be found in the Catalog.
    • The application will require you to upload the supporting documentation you prepared in Step 1. Your application is not complete until all supporting documentation has been uploaded and you have submitted the application.
  3. Application decision
    • Complete applications are reviewed in the order in which they are submitted and may take up to 15 business days to assess and process. Incomplete applications will result in further delays. ACP will notify you via email once a decision has been made or if we have any questions regarding your application.
  4. Provide your payment.
    • If approved, you will be required to provide payment online. The college’s fees are outlined in the ACP fee schedule. Only the following payment methods will be accepted:
