Initial registration (pharmacy technicians)

Before applying to register with ACP, you need to create an account in myACP. For new accounts

  1. Navigate to myacp.abpharmacy.ca.
  2. Click “Request access.”
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to obtain your access. Note that you will need to refer to confirmation emails that will be sent to your email inbox to obtain access to myACP.

CCAPP pharmacy technician graduate

If you are a graduate of a Canadian pharmacy technician program that is accredited by the Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs (CCAPP), you are eligible to apply to the provisional pharmacy technician register. Registration with ACP is required to practise as a provisional pharmacy technician under the supervision of a pharmacy technician or a pharmacist.

  1. Prepare your supporting documentation. All documents must be in PDF format.
    • If available, proof of graduation (e.g., a letter from your college confirming graduation or diploma).
      • If not available, you may be required to provide proof of graduation later in the application process. 
    • Prepare these initial registration documents.
  2. Complete and submit your application.
    • Once you are ready to apply, complete the following steps:
      • Access the application to the provisional pharmacy technician register in myACP. All applications can be found in the Catalog.
        • The application will require you to upload the supporting documentation you prepared in Step 1. Your application is not complete until all supporting documentation has been uploaded, and you have submitted the application.
  3. Application decision
    • Complete applications are reviewed in the order in which they are submitted and may take up to 15 business days to assess and process. Incomplete applications will result in further delays. ACP will notify you via email once a decision has been made or if we have any questions regarding your application.
  4. Provide your payment.
    • If approved, you will be required to provide payment online. The college’s fees are outlined in the ACP fee schedule. Only the following payment methods will be accepted:
      • Visa
      • Mastercard
    • Payment must be provided within 30 days of your approval or your application will expire, and you will be required to apply again.
  5. 5. Access your practice permit.
    • Once your payment has been processed, your practice permit can be accessed from your myACP profile.
    • The term of a provisional pharmacy technician practice permit is typically two years and commences when the practice permit is issued.
    • You must not practise as a provisional pharmacy technician until you receive notification that your practice permit is issued.

You have two years to complete the entry-to-practice requirements to be a pharmacy technician in Alberta. Once these requirements are met, you are then eligible to apply to the pharmacy technician register in myACP. Additional information available in myACP.

Internationally educated pharmacy technician

If you are an internationally educated pharmacy technician, you must meet the requirements indicated below to be eligible to apply to the provisional pharmacy technician register. Registration with ACP is required to practise as a provisional pharmacy technician under the supervision of a pharmacy technician or pharmacist.

  1. Meet English language fluency requirements.
    • English Language Fluency results must be current within two years at the time of application to the provisional pharmacy technician register.
  2. Complete the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada (PEBC) Qualifying Exam Part 1 (MCQ).
    • The PEBC MCQ result must be current within three years at the time of application to the provisional pharmacy technician register.
  3. Complete a bridging program.
  4. Prepare your supporting documentation. All documents must be in PDF format.
    • Notarized copy of your pharmacist degree or pharmacy technician diploma.
    • Notarized copy of your English Language Fluency results.
    • Notarized letter from PEBC stating successful completion of the Qualifying Exam Part 1 (MCQ).
    • Notarized evidence of successful completion of a bridging program identified in Step #3.
    • Prepare these initial registration documents.
  5. Complete and submit your application.
    • Once you are ready to apply, complete the following steps:
      • Access the application to the provisional pharmacy technician register in myACP. All applications can be found in the Catalog.
      • The application will require you to upload the supporting documentation you prepared in Step 4. Your application is not complete until all supporting documentation has been uploaded and you have submitted the application.
  6. Application decision
    • Complete applications are reviewed in the order in which they are submitted and may take up to 15 business days to assess and process. Incomplete applications will result in further delays. ACP will notify you via email once a decision has been made or if we have any questions regarding your application.

Out of province pharmacy technician

If you are currently a pharmacy technician in another Canadian province or territory, you may transfer to Alberta under the Labour Mobility Act. You must first apply to the provisional pharmacy technician register to complete Alberta’s Jurisprudence Learning Module and Ethics & Jurisprudence Exam. Once these requirements are complete, you may apply to the pharmacy technician register. You must hold the pharmacy technician practice permit in another Canadian jurisdiction both at initial registration and at the time of application to the pharmacy technician register in Alberta.

  1. Prepare your supporting documentation. All documents must be in PDF format.
    • Obtain a letter of standing from the Canadian regulatory authority where you are currently registered as a pharmacy technician. This letter must include the following information:
      • Whether you are in good standing with the current registering body;
      • Whether you have good character, as determined by the current registering body;
      • Whether you have any restrictions, limitations, or conditions imposed by the current registering body and if so, identifying the restriction, limitation, or condition; and
      • Whether the registering body is aware of any complaints, investigations, disciplinary proceedings or criminal proceedings relating to competency, conduct, or character that are ongoing or completed;
        • if so, identifying and providing particulars of any such complaint, investigation, disciplinary proceeding or criminal proceeding, including the outcome of the complaint, investigation or proceeding.
    • Obtain a statement of registration history from any other Canadian regulatory authority where you previously have been registered as a pharmacy technician. This statement must include the following information:
      • Whether the registering body is aware of any complaints, investigations, disciplinary proceedings or criminal proceedings relating to competency, conduct, or character that are ongoing or completed;
        • if so, identifying and providing particulars of any such complaint, investigation, disciplinary proceeding or criminal proceeding, including the outcome of the complaint, investigation or proceeding.
    • If you are a pharmacy technician transferring from the province of Quebec, you must submit evidence of English language proficiency with your initial application in accordance with the Labour Mobility Regulation.
    • Prepare your initial registration documents.
  2. Complete and submit your application.
    • Once you are ready to apply, complete the following steps:
      • Access the application to the provisional pharmacy technician register in myACP. All applications can be found in the Catalog.
      • The application will require you to upload the supporting documentation you prepared in Step 1. Your application is not complete until all supporting documentation has been uploaded, and you have submitted the application. Incomplete applications and incomplete requirements will result in further delays and may result in refusal of your application. If this happens, you will be required to reapply.
  3. Application decision

You will be initially placed on the provisional register to complete ACP’s Jurisprudence Learning Module and Ethics & Jurisprudence Exam. Once successfully completed, you are then eligible to apply to the pharmacy technician register in myACP. Additional information available in myACP.

Courtesy pharmacy technician register (locum)

If you are currently a pharmacy technician in good standing in another Canadian province or territory, you may apply to the courtesy pharmacy technician register if you require registration in Alberta on a temporary basis to either

  • practise as a pharmacy technician temporarily in Alberta (registration as a Pharmacy Technician Locum is required), or
  • teach the practice of pharmacy technicians to regulated members of ACP (registration as a Pharmacy Technician CE Provider is required).

You must maintain your registration in the other jurisdiction while registered on the courtesy pharmacy technician register.

  1. Prepare your supporting documentation. All documents must be in PDF format.
    • Obtain a letter of standing from the Canadian regulatory authority where you are currently registered as a pharmacy technician. This letter must include the following information:
      • Whether you are in good standing with the current registering body;
      • Whether you have good character, as determined by the current registering body;
      • Whether you have any restrictions, limitations, or conditions imposed by the current registering body and if so, identifying the restriction, limitation, or condition; and

Once approved, the term of a practice permit for a Pharmacy Technician Locum term is 45 days and commences when the practice permit is issued. You must not commence practising in Alberta until you receive notification that your practice permit is issued.

Courtesy pharmacy technician register (CE provider)

If you are currently a pharmacy technician in good standing in another Canadian province or territory, you may apply to the courtesy pharmacy technician register if you require registration in Alberta on a temporary basis to either

  • practise as a pharmacy technician temporarily in Alberta (registration as a Pharmacy Technician Locum is required), or
  • teach the practice of pharmacy technician to regulated members of ACP (registration as a Pharmacy Technician CE Provider is required).

You must maintain your registration in the other jurisdiction while registered on the courtesy pharmacy technician register.

A CE Provider is prohibited from practising as a pharmacy technician in Alberta and from providing patient care. The scope of a CE Provider in Alberta is restricted to the provision of professional development programs.

  1. Prepare your supporting documentation. All documents must be in PDF format.
    • Obtain a letter of standing from the Canadian provincial regulatory authority in the jurisdiction where you are currently licensed. If applicable, letters of standing are also required from any other Canadian jurisdiction where you are or previously have been licensed. The letters must indicate your current status within that jurisdiction.  
    • Prepare these initial registration documents.
  2. Complete and submit the appropriate application.
    • Apply to the courtesy pharmacy technician register as a CE Provider in myACP. All applications can be found in the Catalog.
      • The application will require you to upload the supporting documentation you prepared in Step 1. Your application is not complete until all supporting documentation has been uploaded, and you have submitted the application.
  3. Application decision
    • Complete applications are reviewed in the order in which they are submitted and may take up to 15 business days to assess and process. Incomplete applications will result in further delays. ACP will notify you via email once a decision has been made or if we have any questions regarding your application.
  4. Provide your payment.
    • If approved, you will be required to provide payment online. The college’s fees are outlined in the ACP fee schedule. Only the following payment methods will be accepted:
